"It's In Your Dna Dave".

I was doing some work for an Irish man who owns an holiday home near me the other day.  Filling pot holes in his road and fixing fencing.

We talked a myriad of subjects and I commented on looking for Irish pubs when on holiday abroad.

I said I love Irish food like bacon, cabbage and potatoes:

My grandparents staple diet.

I am sure they ate it every day.  Well it seemed like it.  Even in July when the sun was cracking the flags and we would come on holiday to West Cork for a fortnight.

My father would have his wakes holidays and time off from the wool felt mill and we would go hay making.  Piking loose hay on to the horse and cart.

My mother and my grand mother would bring us grub and bottles of cold tea to quench our thirst.

When we visited the Irish pub in Faro on the last day of our February  holiday I was feeling rather peckish and so was J.  We both ordered the same meal.  When we flew home J made the same meal but with Cumberland sausages from Lidl:

Irish bangers with gravy and colcannon or mashed potatoes even.

The holiday home owner said to me:

"It's in your dna Dave"

I think he had a point.

  1. I adore sausages in onion gravy with mash, but only butchers sausages, Cumberland or Lincoln. My mums best was bacon egg and chips served at lunchtime with a cold cider shandy.

  2. It's a good nutritious and filling meal Marlene. We should celebrate our home countries and counties regional recipes and drink. Bacon, eggs, and Heinz baked beans is one of my favourites. I have been served chips with a full Irish breakfast here in West Cork. They are a good addition. You have wonderful ciders. I am looking forward to one of my Rock festivals and the cider in the West country later this year. Thanks Marlene..

  4. Sorry JayCee. When I plan my next sun holiday. The destination must have Irish and English pubs serving our favourite meals. Beef stew for tea tonight. You can't beat homemade food. Thanks JayCee.

    2. I have just gone back to Northwest England fifty years ago on a Friday night when my mum would queue up for a chippy tea JayCee. I don't eat much fish even though I can see the sea from our kitchen window. Sounds like your having a good tea JayCee?

  5. I have just had sausages and red cabbage (pickled) and a baked potato for tea. It is very quick to prepare with salt and then put in vinegar with a few black peppercorns. I like bacon and cabbage too. I pickle red cabbage each week as it best when it is fresh so I do a little at a time. I like Irish pubs and when I see one when I am in a European city I usually visit. Thanks Dave.

    1. We had red cabbage with our beef stew Rachel. I must grow some this year. I often go in "Oirish" and real Irish pubs on my travels. They have a great ambience and make you feel at home. It's the Sky News playing in some of them I don't like. Thanks Rachel.

  9. Very clever YP. They call it dinner or the supper here in West Cork. We still call it tea.
