I recently planted my onions sets in compost filled plastic modules before I went to the Algarve.
They are in my potato "chitting room" and indoor potting shed or small bedroom to be precise.
I took this onion 🌰 out of the module to show the lovely root sock developing on my hand.
I just mist them with water every few days and don't drown them.
Why push onion sets in the cold and wet soil when you can start them off in doors?
This time of year it's normal to get itchy feet or fingers and want to get out planting and sowing in the veg plot.
I prefer to plant and sow indoors and produce my own strong plants to plant out when or if the weather improves.
Wow! What a lot you got!!
ReplyDeleteI have two modules trays of them JayCee. Plus my Japanese winter onions and lots of frozen ones in the freezer still.
ReplyDeleteIt's a perfect day to be outside here along the south coast, no planting, I've sorted and swept my greenhouse, just had a cold cider shandy with our lunch.
ReplyDeleteYou always seem to be blessed with weather where you live Marlene. It's just stopped raining here. Cider shandy sounds wonderful.
DeleteWe do live in one of the driest parts in UK, can cause issues with water, in a hot summer my water butts do run dry.
DeleteIBC tanks are well worth investing in. It's amazing how much water runs down our drain pipes. Ireland should export water.
DeleteThe sun has finally come out to warm us up. It has been far too cold to think of the garden. I'd better get out and look at a few seeds. Onions are a winter crop here but this year I didn't plant any.
ReplyDeleteMaybe spring has finally arrived in Greece. I hope so
I grow onions all year round Linda. We could do with your sunshine.
