These are the last of our Winter onions. We call them: 'Japs'.
They were first introduced from Japan in the nineteen seventies. I first grew them twenty five years a go from onion sets. They grow right through autumn, winter and spring. Even in 2010 when the snow came and we couldn't get about for nearly two weeks. The snow never bothered them. They are usually ready to harvest in June.
The beauty of growing your own is you can eat them when they are small.
This year we have decided to grow our winter onions from seed. We may buy some sets too.
I found these online for sale. We placed our order on the Sunday and the post delivered them on Tuesday . How is that for service? 750 onion seeds to be sown in August. Do you thi
nk I couild/should sow them now? I have an area where some of the new potatoes were lifted and I think the'Japs' will love following them.
What do you plant after your potatoes? Spring cabbage, Autumn King carrots, a Green Manure like mustard? Answers on a post card or even leave a comment! They're always very welcome! Are you enjoying the sun? I'm watering twice a day at the moment.
Here's an appropriate track for the blog theme: Green Onions and the great Jon Lord and his band.
That was better than watching Glastonbury. Well apart from Kylie and Johnny Marr of course!ReplyDelete
Well Dave, I have people on both sides of my house who use weedkiller. So when the stupid woman next door to me was spraying under our hedge towards our trees I let rip today. I couldnt help it, it wouldnt stay in. I have put in rainbow chard, kale and dinosaur kale into the flower beds as I dont have a veg garden here and that area is the most sheltered from the winds and the stupid witch was spraying all over. So if I had a used potato bed I would probably put in kale and chard. Then the stupid woman probably wouldnt do it. Can you tell I am angryReplyDelete
My friend Sol. Good on you. You made me smile. I planted Kale in the polytunnel where the early potatoes lived. The Kale is growing like Triffids. I can tell you're angry. Thanks Sol. You're tonic for the soul.ReplyDelete
We had those growing at our old house My brother in law was mighty fond of them.ReplyDelete
Hi Joanne. They're one of my favourite vegetables that I like to grow. They are not faint hearted and are content to grow in any weather. Thanks!ReplyDelete
Not being an energetic gardener, I'm sticking with Jon Lord!ReplyDelete
Hi Valerie. I love growing onions. I think I saw him play at Castle Donington when he was in Whitesnake. Yep. ThanksReplyDelete
Promised spook story on blog today.Delete
Yes I just popped over and left a comment. Great sppok story!Delete
I've only ever grown spring onions. One of our few winter veges, along with lettuce and rocket, that are guaranteed to grow. Oh and garlic.ReplyDelete
At least we always have everything for a winter salad.
Only watering once a day. Seems like a waste in our dodgy garden.
The market always has fresh seasonal vege...except the peaches
Hi LA. Parsnips, leeks, turnips and swedes, Autumn King carrots, spring cabbage and brussel sprouts are the other vegetables we grow through winter.ReplyDelete
We buy organic vegetables from Lidl too. Sounds like you have a good local producer's market. Thanks.
You're obviously a chap who knows his onions Dave. Sorry :-/ReplyDelete
Have you seen the christening photo. Charles looks like he's had a couple. Will looks stern.
Camilla almost stealing the show with her cocked hat. Baby Archie looks like his grandad, mothers side. The American one who wasn't invited to the wedding.
Good pun Gwil! Have you never thought of getting yourself an allotment? I saw some great ones once in Vienna, next to the river Danube.ReplyDelete
Archie looks like his mum. I wonder if they will stay in Blighty or move to America. Don't think I would like all the pomp and ceremony and intrusion. I am not really a Royalist. I loved Diana. Beautiful person.
If I only had time for all the things I'd like to do. I enjoyed helping my grandad on his allotment, or more correctly I enjoyed sitting in the deckchair listening to his tall tales and watching him smoking his pipe in the chair next to mine. The situation was great. It was on a slope overlooking a cricket green. You could fall asleep there listening to the bees buzzing and the cork on the willow and the occasions. shout of howzat, no trouble. Sometimes we'd strain our eyes and look through the summer haze at those figures clad in white flannel but they never seemed to move.Delete
Grandad on his allotment. That reads like the first chapter of a great memoir Gwil. Beautiful prose. Cork on willow is an amazing sound. Cricket is a science.ReplyDelete

Hi,i just want to share my experience with everyone. I have being hearing about this blank ATM card for a while and i never really paid any interest to it because of my doubts. Until one day i discovered a hacking guy called MR ANTHONY. he is really good at what he is doing. Back to the point, I inquired about The Blank ATM Card. If it works or even Exist. They told me Yes and that its a card programmed for only money withdraws without being noticed and can also be used for free online purchases of any kind. This was shocking and i still had my doubts. Then i gave it a try and asked for the card and agreed to their terms and conditions.. Four days later I received my card and tried with the closest ATM machine close to me, to my greatest surprise It worked like magic. I was able to withdraw up to $3000 daily. ATM has really change my life. If you want to contact them, Here is the email address email@example.comReplyDelete
