I Found A Miners Lamp From Wigan At A Carbootsale In West Cork.

We got up this morning and  went to a carboot sale here in West Cork.  It's great to see things getting back to normal after the Covid lockdowns and restrictions.

I  bought a few things, just for a change! I spotted the silver and brass miners lamp.  It's 1940s and JH Naylor Ltd Wigan is engraved on it.

I've put it next to my brass M&Q safety lamp made in Ecckles  1977.  I have been looking for another one for a while and never expected to find one here in West Cork.

You never know what you might find on a carboot sale do you?

  1. Are those carbide? They are in nice shape. Tim saw one new that he wanted. The dealer said 'that one's mine but I have more.' He did. All of them terribly corroded. Nice find!

  2. One is brass and the other one is brass and aluminium or steel. I am pleased you like them. I think miners are amazing and incredibly brave people.

  4. They are salt of the earth Debby. My great Irish grandfather worked in lead and tin mines here in West Cork. It must be where I get my digging Gene's from? Thankfully it's above ground on the vegetable plot!

  6. Thanks Rachel. They are different and like old buildings and farm machinery I always wonder what stories could they tell. I seem to pick up on the pyschometry of old things.

  12. Well we always meet interesting people YP. I was talking about George Orwell and The Road To Wigan Pier to the miners lamp sellers this morning. I thought you would like the lamp. It's a beautiful industrial artefact of our heritage .

    1. I love those old lamps and wish I had the lamps that my grandfather, great grandfather and great great grandfather used to light their way when they were down in the bowels of the earth.

  13. Those lamps sound like long lost friends shedding light and keeping your ancestors safe underground YP. I would imagine you would find miners lamps in antique shops in former mining areas like Barnsley? There's plenty on Ebay but the postage looks expensive.
