Posh House Revisited.

Yorkshire Pudding  mentioned Chatsworth House on his blog the other week. This rang a bell and reminded me of an anecdote I posted about the posh house on here in 2012:
I once helped build half a golf course (the other nine holes already existed) close to the moorland overlooking Manchester and the Cheshire Plain in 1993 .
I remember  saying one morning to a digger driver:
“Did you have a good weekend Bill?”
He replied:
“Not really.  Me and the missus went to that posh house,  Chatsworth House in Derbyshire.   It was a Bank Holiday Monday and the world and his wife had decided to visit.  The traffic tail-backs went back for miles.
We eventually got inside and it was full of snobs.  The house was full of old furniture and paintings.  She likes that kind of crap!  I wouldn’t mind there wasn’t even an effing bar to get a pint!”
I just laughed and Bill said: "What are you laughing at?"
" I'm laughing at what you just said."
Then he started laughing.  It was a good start to a working day.

  1. Sounds like Bill was a bit of a culture vulture with his keen interest in home furnishings and eighteenth century craftsmanship. By the way, can you remember exactly where that golf course was?

  3. I just called you JayCee YP. Bill was one of lifes characters and you never knew when he was being serious. The golf course was several miles north of Manchester. I thought it was appropriate for bank holiday anecdote. Wild and wet here today down on the Irish Riviera.

    1. Unfortunately, I am not as sexy as JayCee but if I put on a sparkly dress and make up, I am all yours!

    1. Ha, ha. One out of three is not bad!
I was going to say that my house must be very posh as it has lots of old furniture. Perhaps not quite the same as Chatsworth though.

  5. You should post a photo or two of your posh furniture JayCee. It would be a good blog topic. We once visited Sandringham and looked at the Majolica. I wouldn't have paid a fiver for it on a carboot sale. It was priceless. Shows what I know. 😀

  6. You never know JayCee. One person's junk is another person's treasure. I miss junk shops. You don't see many these days. There's an advert on the television at the moment which shows a man coming out of a shed holding a framed oil painting and he says: "Who's Van Gogh?" Like most adverts I can't remember what it's for.

    1. That ad is for "Boomin" - a new property portal site. I can imagine another TV ad in which you speak directly to camera - "For the best garden gnomes in West Cork visit Dave's Gnomes on the north side of The Sheep Shed Peninsula. By appointment to Her Majesty Queen JayCee Queen of The Isle of Man and The Calf of Man."

    2. Thanks for the heads up YP. If JayCee her majesty she could knight us both for services to blog writing and corny jokes. I might also be awarded a CDM or Cadburys dairy milk.

  7. I live in a house full of old furniture too. I am certain that it is not especially valuable, but I see things, and I love them, or they have a special meaning to me...and somehow they follow me home. My husband tolerates it. He has his own collections, which is how we come to have a nickel plated grill for a 1910 Ford truck in a guest bedroom.

    1. I love tramp art and Shaker furniture Debby. I also love things old and I love rooting round charity shops, flea markets and carboot sales. I seem to be collecting or making lots of plants too.

  8. In. many ways I think he was right. I often think National Trust type places are full of dull brown paintings and attendants paying deference to 'his lordship'... I love the gardens but seldom venture inside

  9. Totally agree The bike shed. I especially like productive walled kitchen gardens and Italian sunken gardens. Tea rooms make them wonderful places to visit on a nice Summers day. Cholmondeley gardens in Cheshire was always a favourite garden to visit when we lived in Blighty.

  10. What about my sofas Dave? they are 25 years old? the leather has just worn in exactly right! lol

  11. Hi Sol. I can believe it. I once sat on an horrible looking sofa and it was the most comfortable thing ever. It's not how how they look it's how comfortable they are to sit on.
