A Onion Bhaji Mix.

We found this onion bhaji mix in Aldi in Dunmanway the other day.

We have tried to make these onion starters many times but they have never turned out like the ones you get in the Indian restaurants.

I have lots and lots of onions growing in my veg plot.  So I lifted two of them and cut off their roots and stalks and through them on the compost pile.

J mixed the batter with the sliced onions and cooked them in hot oil.  Then the instructions on the packet said to place them in the oven for fifteen minutes.  This is how they turned out:

Our organic home grown onions and a bhaji mix for 99 Cents made a very nice meal and the best we have ever made.  Not bad if we say it ourselves.

  1. I wonder how they make their batter so that it works out better than your home made?

  3. Oh, I adore an onion bhaji or two! I always order them when having an Indian takeaway. By the looks of it, yours appear to have turned out nicely. Well done...mostly to Jean!

  4. I prefer the starters to the main course YP. J made the bhajis. I planted and grew the onions and chopped their roots and stalk off.

No footity ball tonight. So we are going to watch Guy Martin rescue a Lancaster Bomber on Channel 4. He's quite a character.

    1. If A is Onion Bhaji Mix, what is B? Samosas?

    2. Could be. Did you hear about the Mexican fireman who called his two sons: Hosea and B Hose.

  5. I always thought that making bhajis was easy...a simple batter made with gram flour...

  7. Our nz visitors bought a nz batter mix for fish. And another one for chocolate balls. Add water and oil I think. Amazing what comes in packets these days and is better than homemade. The batter was better than my homemade.
I wish we could get your bhaji mix. Somehow I doubt it. I'd love to try some. We dont even have an indian restaurant here

  8. Hi Linda. We bought the onion bhaji mix in Aldi. There are some very good Indian restaurants here in Ireland.

  9. I'd never heard of 'bhaji'. It really does sound delicious. Unfortunately, our Aldi carries no indian food that I know of. Italian, Mexican, with a small bit of Thai and Chinese seasonings sometimes available.

  12. They turned out really well Jules. I don't if it was the mix or roasting them in the oven for twenty five minutes that made the difference. We were really pleased with the results. Perhaps it was my homegrown onions😊?
