Escape To The Country?

I met a man on my new boots testing hike last Saturday.  I commented how there hadn't been many tourists on the walks this year.  He agreed.

One thing a lot of people who I have met have commented on is the sale of houses on the peninsula.  Houses for sale are becoming rarer and rarer.  A lot of the buyers seem to be English owners too.

Are they escaping the cities because they want an EU base after Brexit or is it the Covid threat and the rush to get away from the big towns and cities?

I suppose if you are retired and can drive it's not so bad and you can afford to have your shopping delivered online.   Life ain't so bad.  Well apart from the wet weather we are having at the moment.  It must be different if you have a mortgage and have to commute for work and your house is dormitory housing?  Somewhere that you have your tea, watch the telly and sleep in.

I love the views and walking inthe countryside and the seaside but one thing I have never got use to is the rural isolation.  Perhaps  being born in a town means you can't take the town out of the person?

I think that's why I write blogs.  It's a way of communication to other people.  It's been a strange year for everyone with no holiday, social events, Rock concerts, closed "wet" pubs...?

I have been isolating for nearly twenty years.

  1. The property market over here has gone crazy these past few months. Lots of people wanting to move house, but all for different reasons. Trouble is, it is pushing up the prices!

  2. Hi JayCee. Yes I was surprised with IOM property prices when I looked on Right Move. I know people can sell houses in London and buy cheaper property in say Kent and have a lot of money left in the bank. Property is a lot cheaper in Ireland compared to the UK.

  3. There are positives and negatives connected with all living circumstances. We have had quite a lot of people moving up to Sheffield from the south during this pandemic. When folk get into the habit of working on line it occurs to them they don't necessarily have to live in the south east. My daughter and son-in-law are examples of this trend.

  4. Good to read YP. I have often looked for online jobs but never found anything suitable. Either that or I am not suitable for the post?

We seem to be living in a post industrial society and we don't physically make much ourselves. Everything seems to be made in China. My new walking boots and waterproofs are classic examples of this although they carry UK trademarks.

  5. My Brother thought it was going to be wonderful in the country but he soon moved back into the town. He couldn't stand the silence, especially at night.
I think we all think a cottage in the country would be wonderful don't we. I was hoping one of my kid's might come up trumps for us but doesn't look likely, lol

  6. Hi Briony. I visited Dorset a couple of years ago and loved the place. I could easily move there if it had a village pub and allotments. Property is very expensive there though. I like city breaks too. Especially going in Wetherspoon's and seeing a Rock concert or two. I agree with Yorkshire Pudding. There are positives and negatives connected with all living circumstances. Thanks for your thoughts.

  7. I’m rather enjoying the “encouragement” to stay home, but then I am a strong introvert. My poor dh is as strong an extrovert, and he’s not to happy and seems to come up with reasons to go out. To be fair, only UPS and FedX deliver here, no food services or groceries will...even the home improvement stores that promise same day delivery on the tv don’t do local deliveries. I find I need less and less except cooking materials! Cheers!

  9. Having never lived in a town, I enjoy the quiet and comparative isolation of the country!
    No annoying neighbors...usually...

  10. Hi Lynda. I don't think you notice the quiet or lack of people when you have grown up in the countryside. Thanks for your comment,

  11. I'm quite a loner, and could happily live somewhere remote, but adding it up, I've probably lived 50/50 in the country or on the edge of market towns, so usually quite quiet. I've met a lot of people who have moved to West Wales over the years and can't hack it. It's either lack of shops and services or the rain that gets to them! We've had very high numbers of houses selling lately too, something I think has happened around the UK.

  12. Hi the veg artist. My dream would be to live in Portugal during the winter and here in the summer. It's been a very wet year here and you can't do any gardening at the moment. A lot of people seem to be moving to the countryside this year.

  13. LOL! That last line was great! I'd say, "Join the crowd..." but that would be an oxymoron, wouldn't it? Merry Christmas!

  14. Hey Dave I think alot of people are moving so they dont have a mortgage to pay. Here people are moving from London where they get a basement flat with 1 bed, they can get a 6 bedroom mansion. We are going from tier 1 to tier 4 on boxing day. Such joy. I am sick of covid
