J went to collect the hens and duck eggs and came back with this very small specimen:
Our hens are all adults and it was not laid by a young pullet.I Googled this small egg phenomonen. Apparently the are called Fairy Eggs and it occurs when a mature hen releases an egg without a yolk.
Have any of you smallholders or poultry keepers ever come across these small egg layers?
Do they hatch into fairies?
ReplyDeleteDunno? Perhaps the Leprechauns hens laid it? Are you here all week Tasker?
ReplyDeleteIt may hatch into an alien life form?
ReplyDeleteThe Clangers Soup Dragon perhaps? I could do with a soup cook.
DeleteI remember seeing these tiny eggs from time to time. I think mum just shrugged and carried on egg sorting as she used to sell to Sainsburys and the egg lorry used to come and pick up her egg trays so she had to keep going. I can't imagine any of this happening now because it was so small scale. Her hens were always outside with a hut for night time. Proper farm eggs.
ReplyDeleteProper farmer eggs. Fresh and bewly laid and fed on a mixed diet Rachel.
ReplyDeleteAre you sure that Jean didn't lay it herself?
ReplyDeleteMisogynous comment Mr Pudding. Don't want to go back to those days.
ReplyDeleteDid we ever leave them Reverend?
DeleteI wonder some times YP.
DeleteI have never heard of that! I hope you will show a picture when you crack it open. Inquiring minds want to know.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately that will never happen Debby. See latest photo and explanation.
DeleteHow did I miss that???
DeleteAnd even if there is anyone here who could speak cat, you'd be no closer to the truth. The cats would all be pointing at the dogs.
DeleteYes Debby. When the cats away the mice will play.
DeleteThis is terrifying. Just sayin.
ReplyDeleteI have heard them called wind eggs and have seen 1 or 2, dainty little things, produced without yolks,
ReplyDeleteWind eggs? Thanks for the heads up Kathy.
DeleteSadly no room for chickens here, or a bee hive.
ReplyDeleteMe thinks you would like your own smallholding or allotment Marlene.
DeleteMy dream, hubby's nightmare, Marlene, Poppypatchwork
DeleteJohn Seymour inspired me with his self sufficiency books. I just wish I somewhere with a better climate. I like Portugal but it gets very hot and I would want to grow vegetables.
DeleteAlien hens DB?
