West Cork Pasties.

Another thing we miss from Blighty is the Pasty.  I have sampled Cornish, Dorset, Lancashire and Wiltshire pasties on my travels around Merry olde England.

Have you noticed on Sky News they have started saying England instead of Britain or the UK?  The other in word is "the jab."

Any road.  We can't  find a decent pie shop here in West Cork.  It's  bacon and sausages or chicken curry and steak pies.  No spud (meat and potato) pies or pasties.  So we decided to make some:

West Cork pasties made with potato, onion and mince.  The wife made four of them.  I'm having another one for my dinner this morning.

The moral of the story is if you can't  buy something,  make it yourself!   Anyone else doing any baking?

  1. If you have never tasted a scrumptious Yorkshire pasty you have never lived. Yorkshire pasties are out of this world.

Later I shall be baking the food of the gods... golden Yorkshire puddings that almost float out of the oven. Oh, my children!

    1. P.S. Applause for Mrs Northsider and her greedy helper for producing original Sheep Shed Pasties! You have dinner in the morning?

    2. I know someone who works at the Aunt Bessie factory in Hull. The Yorkshire puddings they produce are not for consumption in Yorkshire but they are okay for those who live Down South or up in Scotland.

    3. Why Scotland YP? They are anti Brexit, make superb Malt whisky and Nessie lives there.

  3. I forgot to say that my pasty contains minced chillies to give it a bit of oomph and make it "hot, hot".

  4. Being Welsh, I always notice when people use the terms English or England, when they actually mean the whole of the UK. It's not new, and not just Sky News, it happens all the time. Really, really annoying.

  5. You're right the veg artist. They also have a North of England Correspondent. But there isn't a South of England Correspondent. I wonder why? Thanks.

  6. Don't they make corned beef pasties in Wales? I think miners wives invented the pasty and they could handle them with dirty hands?

    1. I think it was Cornish miners - meat one end, fruit filling the other.

    2. I think you're right and the pastry had it's own distinctive crimping pattern like Arran jumpers had for the Fishermen.

  7. Oh yes, the best pasties ever. One day I'll come to West cork and sampled them/yours, after passing through Cornwall, Dorset, Lancashire and Wiltshire. At the moment I have to make my own too and they ain't half bad!

  9. There used to be in my family a lunch tin shaped like the pasty. It had a hinged lid, the the pasty tray, and the cavity of the lunch tin held hot water to keep the pasty warm until lunch. The lunch tin belonged to a coal miner.

  10. Gosh Joanne. I would love to have seen a photo of that. I have a miners lamp. My great great grandfather was a tin, silver, copper, lead miner here in West Cork. Thanks.

  11. When I lived in Michigan, pasties were the quintessential food. They were made with, potatoes, onion, rutabaga, minced pork and minced beef. They were awfully good. It was interesting to read about them here. Turns out that a lot of 'yoopers' (people who live in the upper peninsula) have come from your part of the world.

  12. Hi Debby. Sounds like some of the Michigan settlers were European miners, We call rutabaga, Swede. John Ford's grandfather came from near Clonakilty in West Cork, Thanks for the information.

  13. It’s obvious some patients with herpes are being enslaved to the antiviral and other supplementary Orthodox medicine just to help suppress the virus and not a cure. I have been with the virus since 2016 until I was introduced by a blogger who also narrated her story online on how she was cured of Genital Herpes after using Dr Noah Herbal Medicine. This is a year and 2 weeks since I was delivered from genital Herpes. All thanks to God for using this Great herbalist to heal me. I have promised to keep telling good things about Dr Noah. Please feel free to share Your problems with him and don’t forget to tell him I did refer you to Him. Thanks. Write him on mail dr.noahmedicalcenter@gmail.com He deals with Alzheimer virus, Cancer, HIV, Herpes, Genital, warts, ALS, BV, UTI, Virginal infection, Genital, Wart, HPV, Hepatitis A/B, Good luck, HSV, Pregnancy and lots more.
