"What's That Horrible Smell?"

One day  recently I walked in our  house next door.  There was an horrible smell eminating from the machine that goes ping or microwave to  be precise.

I said: "What the flippity flip are you cooking?"

Number two son smiled and said:

" I'm defrosting two mice for my snakes".

" Do you want some for your tea?"

Unbelievable.  I thought St Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland?

Joke:  What did Saint Patrick say has he drove the snakes out of Ireland?

"Are ye alright in the back lads?"

  1. I hate snakes. Why would anyone keep them as pets? Why would anyone have them in the house? Where did the mice come from? Did he pay good money for the frozen mice? Are the snakes under lock and key? Heaven help, do they have names?

  2. Hi the veg artist. Two corn snakes and a Western Hognose. They cost five Euros a week from the pet shop. They are called Roni, Cynthia and Harry. They live in Vivariums. He's also got a bearded dragon, a Geko and two other kinds of lizards. They eat meal worms and crickets and like salad and my homegrown mint.

  3. Ha-ha! That made me laugh. By the way - what's all this about "our house next door"? How many houses have you got? I have heard you can get a house in Liverpool for a quid or three for £2.50.

  4. I'm here all week. Yes there's the old farmhouse where my dad was born and my bungalow which we built without a mortgage. It's not perfect but it's home. Thanks.

  5. I'm with veg on this one. What kind of snakes are they? And are they in a secure container? Once my kids were keeping a garter snake in a large planter on the back porch. It was high enough that they thought a piece of chicken wire was adequate, being 3 feet tall. I was watering the hanging plants and felt something flicking against my bare leg. It was that snake, sitting on top of the chicken wire having a look around. A whole lot of screaming, a watering pot went flying, kids laughed for days.

    1. I shouldn't laugh Debby. But that is so funny. They are corn snakes and a Western Hognose. I've had to wear them round my neck. I will take some photos of them in their vivarium. Thanks.

    2. Thank you Debby, it's good that someone understands! I've just looked up corn, hognose and your garter snakes on Wiki, and really wished I hadn't. I've even been known to scream at worms.

    3. Perhaps I should do some posts about Rats? Maybe not?😊

    4. I've decided that your son must be the anti-Patrick. St. Patrick drove the snakes out. Your son drove them back in. WTH, Dave? Not a fan of rats either, although I have to say I have had very little experience with them and totally intend to keep it that way.

    5. Hi Debby. Rats are everywhere. I would always have a cat living in the countryside. They keep the rats and mice away.

    6. We have plenty of mice in the country. When we bought our house in town, it was a repo, meaning the previous owner had defaulted on the loan and walked away. We got the house for an amazing price. But the previous owner (once he realized he would lose his house) moved in with his new girlfriend at her house but returned to his beautiful old house once a week to drop off two bags of garbage. After a year, the first two stories were waist deep in garbage bags. The stench was overwhelming. We got the house for $15,000 cash. It was structurally sound, but we spent a year cleaning it. It had quite a rodent problem. It took the better part of a year to take care of that little problem as well. We repainted and refinished the hardwood floors and we have quite a nice house. But I will never quite forget when first I saw it, filthy and infested with rodents. We have a cat, but she shows no inclination to supplement her diet. At the retirement property, we have a feral cat called 'get along' who we feed and make sure he has a snug home out of the wind. He's a mouser.

    7. Amazing house price and amazing story Debby. That's about 12000 Euros! We have a cat called Domino and he's a brilliant mouser and rather. You need a cat when you live in the countryside.

    8. So because the cat catches the live mice, your son buys frozen ones? This is getting more and more bizarre.

    9. Ha,ha. The cat destroys or eats his local wild mice. The pet shop mice are clean and bred for food.

    10. Our first house was about $3500, back in in the first decade of the new millennium when the bottom fell out of real estate. The house was an American four square with a hole in the floor straight through to the basement. So much work! We had to completely gut it. Jack it up and put new beamwork under it. Rewire. Replumb. It took us three years to complete, but we ended up with a beautiful two unit rental with river views and balconies. The money from that went into the purchase of a new place, which we fixed up (the next one only took a year). I'm always a little taken aback when I see the prices on your homes in UK. We've never bought a house for over $65,000. We fix them up carefully. The last three houses we bought sold very high because they are move in ready. One earned us way more than we had listed it at.

    11. PS, no need to post that, Dave. It was just a comment on how different things are here.

    12. Thanks Debby. House prices are a lot less than the UK here in Ireland. They are very expensive in the Irish cities and some coastal areas. You have worked very hard and achieved a lot with your house renovations.

  6. We have loads of mice here. No need to buy 'em frozen!

  7. Do you get them in your house JayCee? When we lived next door we were visited by some field mice. I watched River Cottage when HFW met the white witch who told him to write a letter to rid River Cottage of mice. So guess what? Yep. I wrote: Please Mr and Mrs Field Mouse we wish you no harm. Please will you go back to your homes in the the fields. Thank you. Guess what. They couldn't read!
