People often say Elvis Presley was the king of Rock'n'roll. I must admit I like him a lot and I love watching his videos and would love to visit Gracelands some day.
But for me the man who introduced the world to Rock'n'roll it's Chuck Berry.
He brought the blues and soul and invented Rock'n'roll. John Lennon once said if you want another name for Chuck Berry it's called Rock'n'roll.
Songs like "Johnny Be Goode brought electric guitars and fast music into nineteen fifties lives.
Let me give you an example of how Chuck struts his stuff and remember it is the nineteen fifties:
Here's another Chuck Berry video:
His facial expressions make me smile. He dragged the world screaming and dancing into the world we now call Rock'n'roll.
Imagine if Pink Floyd had been around in the early nineteen fifties?
See you tomorrow.
Not forgetting the king of them all Dave, Little Richard.
ReplyDeleteLittle Richard was very good Rachel. I keep looking up Rock and roll pioneers. So many come from America and the blues roots. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI remeber seeing John Lennon saying how important Little Richard had been to him.
DeleteGosh that is a name drop Rachel. John Lennon was my favourite Beatle. I would love to have seen him. I suppose The Beatles were one of the first British Rock n roll bands?
DeleteHe enjoyed himself didn't he.
ReplyDeleteAmazing character and guitarist JayCee. I would love to have seen him play live. I wonder if anyone here did see him play live? I have seen some great live performances from the likes of Ted Nugent, Steve Hackett, Stevie Vai, Uli Jon Roth, Alex Lifeson, Gary Moore and Michael Schenker. Chuck Berry must be up there with them all.
ReplyDeleteThe best. I once saw him live. In London. In the 70s. Electric. Still love the voice, the strut, the music
ReplyDeleteLucky you Linda. He must have been amazing live?
DeleteHave you seen the Ken Burns documentaries on Country Music , and Jazz?
ReplyDeleteI haven't GZ. You have sent me down a music rabbit hole there. Thanks.👍
DeleteIt is quite a long rabbit hole, but they are fascinating series.
DeleteAll his work is good..,and eye opening
Thanks again GZ. His You Tube videos are going to keep me occupied watching them. I wish there was a degree in Rock music that I could study? Perhaps there already is?
DeleteI'm not a fan of Elvis or The Beatles, like you I loved 50's rock and roll, I have always preferred The Rolling Stones. Dark side of the moon will always be my favourite LP, we grew up with the best of the music, Marlene, poppypatchwork
ReplyDeleteI love old Elvis and a lot of Beatles tracks. Especially the introversive stuff. Thin Lizzy and Kansas are my two favourite Rock bands. Magnum and Marillion are not far behind. Then there is ELP and Blue Oyster Cult. I won't bore you. I love rock music like my plants and vegetables. Thanks for your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteElvis Presley? Nah! Chuck Berry? Nope! In my view, the true king of rock n' roll was Roger Whittaker. Sadly, he died last year. You should give him a listen Dave!
ReplyDeleteHe once owned an house in Galway YP. The B side to " Durham Town" was: "Viva Las Galway". They don't make songs like them anymore.😊
