Look How The Chicks Grew!

Remember the newly hatched chicks on top of the vivarium next to the snakes and we made a run and they have become big and two legged lawnmowers.  They are also feeding the grass in the process.

We don't know whether to keep the hens for eggs or even to fatten them a bit more and eat them.

We are also thinking of getting some broiler hen and some Turkey chicks.  I don't fancy killing them but I suppose I could pay the butcher to do it for us  in the same way we send other livestock to them?

Anyone else thinking of fattening some birds?  Could you kill them and eat them?

  1. I remember when I was very young, probably around 4 or 5, my Dad had a go at keeping chickens in the back garden. When it came to killing them he had a few problems and decided he'd had enough. No more chickens.

    1. Yes JayCee I can understand your dad's problem. Perhaps I am still a townie at heart?

  2. The barmaid at "The Hammer and Pincers" doesn't need any more fattening. There's no way I would kill and eat her! I am not a ruddy cannibal Dave!

  3. Chips and crisps sounds like her staple diet YP.

    1. I thought a staple diet mainly consisted of staples. You know about it when you do a Number 2.

  4. As a teenager I would often stay with an aunt and uncle on their farm during the school holidays, and my aunt would 'select' a hen for Sunday lunch. Uncle would have to catch and kill, which he hated doing, then aunt would pluck etc. One day she found a just-to-be-layed egg in the hen. I had the egg for breakfast the following morning!
By the way, the new kitten is lovely!

    1. Your tale reminds me of my Irish Grandmother who would select a hen and kill it and cook it. Glad you like the kitten Veg Artist.

  5. Couldn't kill a chook myself but have no problem about eating them. Except when I'm pretending to be a vegan. I grew up with chooks and turkeys and sheep which were slaughtered for the table. So much better to have a butcher do the butchery though, shudder. I wouldn't like to be present at the event
    Anyway, good idea Dave.

    1. I never like it when I send my livestock to the butchers Linda. But it doesn't bother me eating them. Thanks.

  6. Killing a chicken would be a problem for me. I'm not of that ilk. I would like three chickens, though, just for the eggs. Just 3. I've even got their names picked out: Fanny, Lizzie, and Ernestine.

  7. Go for it Debby and get those 3 hens. Great names.
