It was like Glastonbury music festival with vintage tractors..
I finally managed to get to the ploughing championships both Irish and World this year. 115,500 attended yesterday including yours truly.
Biblical like multitudes descend on the site but the majority of people go for the trade stands. Oh to have lots of money 💰 to buy all these things like diggers and everything what any smallholder, big farmer, country dweller wants.
We set off at 5 and endured some very long traffic jams several miles from the ploughing We got there at 9.20 and I wandered round on my Jack Jones for 3 hours until my phone starting ringing and I made my way through the world and wife crowds and found them waiting at the beer tent. I only had a pint of Heineken for 6 Euros fifty.

Great photos Dave, and I am glad to hear you attended. My brothers all took part in ploughing matches (also called drawing matches here) when they were younger. Great fun and skill in drawing a straight furrow. Our local ploughing match is next weekend.
ReplyDeleteThanks Rachel. I found myself getting far away from the madding crowds and looking at the vintage machinery and ploughing. It was straw fields and lovely brown friable soil and the fields were flat. Ploughing is obviously a very skilful task and the vintage tractors made it an art in itself.

ReplyDeleteIt took you from 5 to 9.30 to get there so I am guessing the event was held near Bantry? My late father-in-law Charlie was an arable farmer. He would have loved it.
ReplyDeleteRatheniska in County Laoias is where the ploughing championships are hosted this year YP. Like I say above most people pay the 25 Euros admission just to browse and shop the trade stands. I love vintage tractors, thanks,

ReplyDeleteThere were lots of modern day tractors on show and ploughing Linda but I prefer the vintage ones. They didn't have sat nav and were made to be fixed in the field. I suppose its rural nostalgia like we like 1950s American cars in Cuba and steam railways in England. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYOU HAVE A STEEL WHEEL??? Does it run???? Oh my goodness, what my husband would give to have one of those! Side note: They are prized by the Amish here, who can use tractors, but only steel wheels. (Short answer: I do not know). He's not home right now, but you are absolutely right. He will enjoy this post, and the ploughing post too.

ReplyDeleteTim came strolling in with his morning bowl of raisin bran with banana, and I said, "A fellow from Ireland has some pictures you will be interested in." When I pulled up this post, he set his bowl down and leaned in, and then said, "Let me sit down." Thank you. We are much interested in the ploughing contests. Here 'tractor pulls' are the thing. My sister wants to pull, once she is retired, and has the time.

ReplyDeletePloughing seem to be an art Mark. I like to watch the ploughman on their vintage tractors accurately following a length of wood stuck in the ground. They have eyes like hawks.
