Another old Victorian advert poster print.
Apparently it was an American advert for a fishing tackle and it was painted 🎨 by GF Gilman. You can buy the said poster on Amazon. I would says our framed one is an original.
Any American or Canadian blog readers and writers like Debby (Life's Funny Like That) familiar with the artist or the poster?
I am going to keep it and hang it close to Pears soap framed poster I showed you the other day.
It doesn't get the product across very well.
ReplyDeleteNo Tasker. Could you imagine the great English fishing writer Isaak Walton talking about the brats in the pond and the cop preventing the Perch from biting? I do like the picture though. The kids expressions are full of devilment.
ReplyDeleteG. F. Gilman seems to be circa mid to late 1800s. His most famous picture that I'm seeing is 'Now I am a Grandma' (AKA Creepy Grandma). I am trying to figure out his full name. There is a James F Gilman, but he's more early 1900s. I'm looking, I'm looking!
ReplyDeleteHey, Dave, I have been looking and can find nothing on G. F. Gilman. I do find quite a lot on J. F. Gilman, however. He was n the same period as your picture, and if you google some of his stuff, the picture fits in with his style (to my admittedly inexpert eye). He was not in advertising, however, but the print does fit in with his subject matter as well, and as Tasker pointed out, the picture does not convey the product well. Let me know what you think. You've got me quite curious.

Thanks for searching Debby. I do like the picture and I am going to keep it.
DeleteIt is great! No disputing that!
DeleteThose kids look naughty. I am glad the cop has got his truncheon out. The cheeky one at the front is about to get a beating. He's probably called Dave.
ReplyDeleteProbably YP. It would have been good if it showed an angler happily still catching fish despite all the mayhem.
DeleteIt's a lovely frame.
ReplyDeleteVictorian I think River.
ReplyDeleteThat's an odd print. Can't imagine how they thought it was a good advertisement.
ReplyDeleteI don't know Linda. I like their facial expressions. Full of devilment and mischief.
