We went to a flea market on Thursday morning.
It was my usual carboot walk around a few times procedure. You always miss something.
On the second time round I spotted an heavy nest of tables. I would say they are varnished oak and were probably quite expensive new. They will be perfect in our new/secondhand Conservstory:
I paid ten Euros for them. The wife bought some net curtains. She will make two curtains for the front room. The German Shepherd pup chewed a big hole in the last ones. She paid five Euros for them.A nice bit of bargain hunting on a Thursday morning. Why buy new when you can buy secondhand?
Table collecting seems to be another thing to add to my list of hobbies!
Have you bought any bargains lately?
and second had is very satisfying when it is solid oak furniture with some class about it. Move over flatpack; you have no place being called furniture.
ReplyDeleteSo true Tigger. They are great for Domino and the other two cats to sit or even have a siesta.
ReplyDeleteThey look exactly like the tables my husband took from his mother's flat when she passed away. Like chairs, you can never have enough tables, they always come in handy.
ReplyDeleteI did grab a few bargains last week but have undone my good work today by buying a full price dress in our M&S store.
ReplyDeleteHello Joan. We have two coffee tables in our front room, a dining table in the Conservatory and now there is also the nest of tables. They will be useful if we get any visitors. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi JayCee. By grabbing the bargains made it possible to go posh dress shopping in Mark's and Sparks. Well done.
DeleteWhen we lived in the posh village near the airport. Posh people use to shop in Lidl in Wilmslow and put their shopping in Sainsburys and John Lewis shopping bags. True story.
Those tables are a great bargain. There's nowhere here for us to find any bargains but I did pick up 3 good english books from the free book exchange downtown. Those were a good find. Most of the foreign books seem to be scandanavian. There must be a lot of scandies coming in on yacht holidays. I hope I can get down there again and search for some more books before the rest of the islands english speakers get them all
ReplyDeleteHi Linda. QWe burned diesel travelling to the market and we went somewhere else but our purchases are still bargains. Are there any markets near you? You could make some money from the tourists.
ReplyDeleteAnd buying second hand is much more sustainable too. I like the tables - they would be interesting (and perhaps more contemporary) if stripped down and oiled.
ReplyDeleteHi Mark. I have been looking in builders skips, charity shops, flea markets and carboot sales all my adult life. Everything new is going mad expensive. Some people will strip them and oil them or even paint them white and make them shabby chic. I will just leave them like they are. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mark. Buying secondhand is good for the planet. I often buy from charity shops so I am supporting worthwhile charities too. I bought a xylophone this week and a copy of "The Land of Green Ginger" by Winifred Holtby. I also bought a story book about a polar bear for our Little Phoebe.
ReplyDeleteSo true YP. Buying second hand is good for the planet and the pocket.
DeleteEverything in my house is secondhand except for the mattress on the bed. I was brought up with secondhand stuff and it has remained that way for me too. I don't go to car boot sales but there are plenty of secondhand stores around here. Thanks Dave.
ReplyDeleteGood to read Rachel. Every one can have nice things if they buy secondhand.
DeleteTable collecting sounds like something that might take up a bit too much room!
ReplyDeleteNot if you make more room for them Sue.
DeleteI saw 3 sheets of new barn sheeting. Normally they go for $30 (minimum) each. He was asking $30 for the 3 of them. $10 each. I was pretty sure Tim would want them. One cell phone call later, the man was pulling up with his truck. He was a happy chappy.
ReplyDeleteYou both sound very resourceful Debby. I am always looking for secondhand or unused rolls of sheep wire/ barbed wire. But I rarely see any. You made an happy chappy.
