It may be the wettest winter on record. Or since 1836 when records began in Blighty. But inside " Portugal " my polytunnel the potatoes haulms are flying it.
I have already earthed the potatoes up a couple of times and I have started putting the hose pipe sprinkler on them once a week.
They seem to be growing really well and it won't be long before the Solanum Tuberosums or spudatoes will be ready to eat. They will be ready long before someone pipes up: "It's too hot for potatoes" and: "Is it hot or is it me?"
Yesterday I saw a glimpse of the first potato 🥔 stalk pushing up in the growing bags.
We planted some more " outside" potatoes the other day and I have another small bag of a new variety to plant in my new plastic raised beds.
Are your potatoes pushing through yet? There is still plenty of time to plant seed potatoes.
It seems strange having to water your Portugal spuds when it is raining so much outside.
ReplyDeleteThey are rejoicing in the Algarve after all the rain JayCee and their reservoirs so full. I probably water my plants and vegetables too much in fairness. Saying that they all look happy for it. The gardens look healthy with all the free nitrogen in the rain. April showers brings May flowers.
ReplyDeleteMy first bag has been earthed up twice, the second bag planted a few weeks later are not showing, I'm hopeful for a crop.
ReplyDeleteThey are good aren't they Marlene? I bought six growing bags from a carboot sale for five Euros and we have had two crops from them. You can always carry them outside in May after any late frosts and you need room in the greenhouse or polytunnel.
ReplyDeleteAll your questions about activity in my own garden are starting to make me feel so ashamed that I am considering topping myself. Trouble is I am too cowardly to select a method so I guess I will just have to carry on with my head hanging down waiting for your next end question.
ReplyDeleteIt's easy to lose your gardening motoring YP. We have Storm Kathleen on the way for the weekend. It's no fun gardening outside at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI put MOJO not motoring autocorrect! To lose ones gardening motoring probably means to crash your lawnmower.
ReplyDeleteCome on Katheen
ReplyDeleteCome on Kathleen
Poor old Johnny Ray
Sounded sad upon the radio
He moved a million hearts in mono
Our mothers used
To sing along, who'd blame them
You're grown (a grown up),
So grown (so grown up), now I must say more than ever
(Come on Kathleen)
Toora loora toora loo rye aye
What about Daniel O'Donnell: "I'll take you home again Kathleen"?
DeleteJealous as a jealous thing. All I have planted is one yacon rhizome. Perhaps you should try those - the tubers that you harvest in Autumn are sweet and crunchy like eating water melon.
ReplyDeleteYacon?🤔 Where is there a Yacon shop? Thanks TM. I am going to Google them tonight. I'm dividing perennials in the polytunnel today.
DeleteI'm thinking of planting tomatoes. We have had little rain and a long dry spell forecast
ReplyDeleteHi Linda. Will you grow them in pots or in the ground. Lidl have tomato plants for sale. I am trying to grow our from seed. They are only a few inches high with a couple of leaves. There is over forty of them. If they grow I will give some away and probably try and sell some cheap Tom plants. It's a deluge here. The tail end of Storm Olivia from the Azores and Storm Kathleen arrives on Saturday. I hope there are no more gales after this. We need your lovely Poros sunshine.
ReplyDeleteI haven't done potatoes yet this year and was really tempted not to bother, but I think I'll have to put some pink fir apple in or it just won't feel right!
ReplyDeleteI have never grown pink fir Kev. We planted some Bim seed potatoes this week. We've really gone to town with potatoes this year.
ReplyDeleteIt is supposed to snow tomorrow. no 🥔 4 me. 😭
ReplyDeleteNo thanks Mr and Mrs Snow. You can't beat fresh new potatoes Debby.
DeleteI'll be buying supermarket potatoes when I do my grocery shopping in the morning.
ReplyDeleteWe are also buying potatoes at this time of year River.
