They Taste The Same.

According to Professor Google 22 billion Pounds is spent on bread and cereal in the UK (not forgetting England) every year.

So what do you have for your breakfast Dave?

Good question.  👍

Well I am a real ☕️ person.  So a cafetiere (French Press) of  black (two sugars) starts my day.  Sometimes I devour half a packet of biscuits.  Recently I having been having a bowl of Bixies:

We get them from our local German garden centre and beer providers and supermarket in Bantry.

I rarely go food shopping so I don't know how much they cost compared to Weetabix?  But I honestly can not tell any difference in the breakfast cereals.

I must compare other foods to see if there are cheaper alternatives.  We paid 2.49 Euros for a pack of 36.

Any suggestions of cheaper /similar options that you buy ?

  2. Real ground black coffee is my first drink of the day Linda. Those Bixies tasted and looked just like Weetabix but a fraction of the price. We had some chocolate bars the other day that looked like Kit Kats with the red wrapping and looked and tasted very similar.

  3. I have Scots porridge oats each morning, done the old fashion way, which I love. As for bread hubby makes a couple loaves each week, much nicer than shop purchased loafs. Marlene, Poppypatchwork

    1. I don't remember that advert JayCee. Have you seen the current one when a holiday maker fills his suitcase with tins of Heinz beans to take on a sun holiday?

  5. I have a friend who is a scientist in food manufacturing and has worked for major food factories throughout Britain. Factories produce food for all supermarkets and place different labels on the food. It is mostly the same but the cost cutting comes in things like packaging at only one size for people like Aldi and sometimes ingredients differ. She is so much in demand she is freelance and advises on food science for any factory or supermarket who will pay her. She originally trained in biochemistry to work in medical research but the money is better in the food industry. However, the supermarkets were also known to be ruthless in the treatment of manufacturers and many went out of business because of it. That is the not so nice side of cheap food and supermarkets.

    1. Thanks for telling us that Rachel. It sounds like a cut throat industry. I read recently that 6 out of ten European vegetables like tomatoes are grown in polytunnels in Almeria in Spain.

  8. I do nearly all of our grocery shopping at Lidl. There are very few top branded products that I prefer ahead of the supermarket's home brands. We always get "Heinz" baked beans and "Heinz" tomato sauce. We have several cereal boxes in our tall cupboard and none of them are top branded. The price differences can be staggering.

    1. Your last sentence says it all YP. I like Heinz baked beans and HP brown sauce but other than them I will eat cheaper food brands.

  9. Generic brand rolled oats (or "quick oats" which are the chopped up version), mixed with a little water and milk, bit of brown sugar and cinnamon, zapped in the microwave for 2 minutes, hot breakfast! I used to add finely chopped dried fruits like dates and apricots but haven't for a while now. They got too expensive.

  10. Eevery so often we get a large bag, maybe 5 kg, of organic rolled oats from a local grower and I have a bowl of porridge with whatever fruit is around (blueberries and strawberries just coming around) and the man takes half the bag, mixes a more elaborate muesli type thing with some dried fruit and nuts and I think alfalfa seed with it for his breakfast.
There was a time when we had cornflakes. A long long time ago.
