Protecting The Parsnips And Carrot Seedlings From Cats.

Cats 🐈 😻 have been digging where we sowed the pregerminated parsnips and carrots 🥕  last week.

I have talked to the likes of Domino, Tigger Kitty, Midnight, Socks and Muss Muss about them not using our growing mediums for cat litter bins.

This seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

We planted the rest of the pregerminated parsnips in more barrels and tubs that I filled and I took my loppers and cut pointy and prickly hawthorn twigs and placed them on top of the growing containers to hopefully  deter the cats.  We will see!

How do you keep cats off your vegetables and gardens?

  1. They're a damn nuisance. I put up barriers like yours too. They've got so much space why do they have to choose freshly planted pots

    1. I think training the m to use cat litter trays makes a rod for our own backs Linda. They love bare raked soil.

  2. I have cats, and I trained them to dig on my flower beds, I have used rose cuttings to keep them off my fruit beds. I did have a herb garden, but put them in pots to keep them safe to use. I'm hoping my willow fences help, I also use nets. Marlene, Poppypatchwork

    1. HI Marlene. Good suggestions. I believe there is spray you can buy to keep them off the garden. Nets or chicken mesh sound a very good solution.

  3. I shoot them with my air rifle. They don't come back when they have lead shot in their arses. But being a kindly chap, I make a point of never shooting them in their faces. Blinding them would be downright cruel.

    2. Hubby has a slingshot and used tiny mud balls, aimed at squirrels and pigeons, they do less harm whilst working, Marlene, Poppypatchwork

    3. What a good idea Marlene. There's some wood pigeons near me in some trees and drive me mad cooing all day. Such a stupid annoying bird.

    4. We have the same birds here and the upstairs neighbour feeds those flying rats in spite of promising me she wouldn't! The constant cooing drives me batty.

  6. I am not surprised your entreaties fell on deaf ears. Cats are not a minding sort of species. Have you got a length of wire fencing you could pull over all the pots?

  7. They are a law unto themselves Anonymous. Wire fencing would work. Good idea. I found some metal mesh today that I was going to use for the peas to grow up.
